Some AT&T customers can now make VoLTE calls to people on other carrier networks

United States carrier AT&T said yesterday that some of its customers in select areas can now make Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) calls to users on other carrier networks. Cross-network VoLTE calls are currently supported for just one unnamed carrier, but AT&T will eventually implement support for multiple carriers.

Unlike traditional calls that use a carrier's voice network (which is separate from a 3G/4G data network), VoLTE calls use a 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network, resulting in crisp sound quality and optimized bandwidth use.

AT&T and Verizon announce VoLTE interoperability for 2015

In a joint press release today, AT&T and Verizon announced their voice over LTE (or VoLTE) interoperability plans for 2015. The companies say they are working to allow customers from the two carriers to make VoLTE calls between each of their networks.

Engineers from Verizon and AT&T have begun extensive testing in lab environments and then plan on moving to field trials. "This approach ensures customers will have a seamless experience making VoLTE HD Voice calls between networks," the release said.

Verizon begins rolling out Voice over LTE ahead of iPhone 6 announcement

With precisely two weeks until Apple's rumored September 9 iPhone 6 announcement, the nation's leading carrier, Verizon Wireless, Tuesday morning announced the official beginning of nationwide Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology roll-out. The carrier in May laid out plans to deploy VoLTE using the AMR-wideband standard.

VoLTE uses high-speed 4G LTE data network to carry voice instead of the legacy circuit-switched voice network. Verizon says users can expect to enjoy higher-fidelity voice calls ”in the coming weeks.“

Additionally, the Big Red carrier said the feature will be enabled on supported devices via a software update.

T-Mobile starts rolling out VoLTE in select markets, starting with Seattle

Deutsche Telekom-owned T-Mobile USA, the nation's fourth largest wireless carrier, on Thursday announced it's started gradual deployment of Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) technology, starting with Seattle.

The move comes just as rival AT&T last Friday brought both VoLTE and HD Voice technologies to select markets and as Verizon Wireless pledged to roll out VoLTE later this year.

That major U.S. telcos are racing to have VoLTE ready at this particular moment in time may have something to do with Apple's expected launch of the iPhone 6 this Fall, alongside iOS 8 which is said to support making voice calls over high-speed LTE networks out of the box...

Verizon announces VoLTE rollout for later this year, iOS 8 expected to support it

Verizon Wireless has announced the roll out of its Voice over LTE technology - better known as VoLTE - will begin across the US later this year.

The new technology will move Verizon's LTE service past data and will offer an HD Voice experience, using the AMR-wideband standard. "This solution provides the best voice quality available now and allows for future interoperability with others using the standard," Verizon claims.

AT&T rolling out HD Voice and Voice Over LTE in select markets beginning next Friday

The nation's second-largest wireless carrier AT&T today announced it started rolling out a pair of high-definition voice calling technologies. As previously promised, both HD Voice and Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) technologies will become available in select markets beginning next Friday, May 23.
