On Thursday, the Japanese multinational video game company officially teased the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, which features a full redesign, a larger handheld display, enhancements to the removable Joy-Con controllers, and more.

The teaser video took us through not only an eye-candy tour of the upgraded hybrid handheld & at-home game console, but also confirmed some important tidbits that we know are going to matter to existing Nintendo Switch owners.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is destined to launch sometime in 2025, with more details expected to surface on April 2nd, a date shared by Nintendo in the teaser video.

Additionally, while we are certain that the Nintendo Switch 2 will gain plenty of exclusive games designed just for it that take advantage of upgrades of the internal hardware, it will be capable of playing all existing Nintendo Switch games with full backward compatibility for physical and digital games.

The teaser also appears to include a new Mario Kart game for the Nintendo Switch 2, which suggests an entirely new game for avid players.

Among some of the notable changes in the Nintendo Switch 2 are the redesigned Joy-Con controllers — those that come affixed to the Nintendo Switch when you buy it. There are changes to how these connect to the sides the console, as well as the digital connection.

There has been speculation that these refreshed Joy-Con controllers will once and for all address the dreaded Joy-Con joystick drift issue that has plagued many users over the years. Of course, this remains unconfirmed as of right now.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is larger, to make room for what appears to be a larger LCD display, and as a result, the kickstand and the Dock have also been designed to make better use of the space.

One thing that flew under the radar is what appears to be an enhanced cooling system. The Nintendo Switch 2 features larger and more expansive vents that may accommodate for either a larger or dual cooling fans. This may suggest an increase in gaming hardware performance.

In what is sure to be a nice iteration bump from the now aging Nintendo Switch platform, the Nintendo Switch 2 offers not only slick new colors and aesthetics, but we also expect some yet-to-be-disclosed bumps in hardware. We’ll have to wait until the announcement date to learn more about it.
